I have been steadily losing my hearing for years. Once, when I had asked Bing to repeat something after the tenth or eleventh time, she rolled her eyes and muttered, "If you can't hear, don't listen."

Well, I somehow heard that.
And I laughed....which only annoyed her further.

There is so much potential for fun with this situation. My dad was like that for years. He stood in the Walmart electronics aisle, blocking the little electric eye that would beep whenever someone entered or exited it, completely unable to hear it going BEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ... finally, one of the salesmen asked him to move.

As someone who is deaf this was priceless. I used to have a great grandmother on Ex husbands side that would turn off her hearing aids at family gatherings. When I asked her why, she said, "The fake sentiments are more amusing on mute." She had her own family pegged so well. Thankfully I divorced my ex and no longer have to deal with them. I did however adore this woman. (Hugs)Indigo

Going deaf runs in our family.. oldest story we tell, is when my Grandma Mieras went through Customs at the Canadian border. The guard asks her "Where were you born?" She answered "Just a little ham"... She had been instructed they would ask if she bought anything while in Canada- couldn't hear the question, but had her answer ready!

My Grandfather had a hearing aid and when wanted to hear you he'd turn it on but the rest of the time he kept it off. You could tell when it was turned off because he'd just smile and nod no matter what was going on LOL
My husband's hearing is getting worse and worse and the other day the kids were fighting, the dogs were barking and he said I'm getting a hearing aid and I'm keeping it turned off - just like your grandfather.

My mom is losing her hearing too and her favorite thing to do is to tell everyone that I just talk so soft. I guess it's her first means of denial. I try to remember to talk in a strong and more audible voice when near her, but not so loudly that she asks me (in a hurt tone) not to yell at her (which she's done before when I spoke a little too loudly). LOL, it's a learning process for all of us.
